Kenosha’s Community Development Block Grant Committee gave its recommendations last week for how to spend the city’s expected $1.07 million in Community Development Block Grants.

The block grants are funded through the federal Department of Housing and Urban Development and are intended to eliminate blight and assist low- to moderate-income families.

Tony Geliche, block grant program administrator for the city, said 30 agencies were recommended for grants in 2010, up from 27 last year.

The recommended distributions:

— $353,997 to the Kenosha Department of Public Works for street improvements

— $214,84 to the Kenosha Program Administration for comprehensive planning

— $85,000 to Wisconsin Women’s Business Initiative Corporation for micro-enterprise technical assistance and loans

— $45,000 to Carpenter’s Home Improvement for the carpentry career and tech education program

— $50,000 to Women and Children’s Horizons for roofing, windows, doors, tuck-pointing and heating and air conditioning

— $35,000 to the Kemper Center for Ambrose Hall door and window replacement

— $33,000 for the Racine/Kenosha Community Action Agency for roof replacement and mold remediation

— $30,000 to the Urban League of Racine and Kenosha for a second-floor classroom and office construction

— $25,000 to the Kenosha YMCA for the Frank Neighborhood Project

— $25,000 to Kenosha County Interfaith Human Concerns Network for the emergency family shelter program

— $23,000 to the Boys and Girls Club of Kenosha for a youth mentoring program

— $20,000 to Women and Children’s Horizons for legal advocacy

— $20,000 to the Kenosha Senior Citizens Council for masonry wall repairs and mold remediation

— $16,000 to the Kenosha Achievement Center for a handicapped-accessible entrance ramp

— $15,000 to ELCA Urban Outreach Center for a low-resource/homeless program

— $15,000 to the Community Economic Development Corporation for micro-enterprise technical assistance

— $13,100 for Kenosha Human Development Services for a kitchen remodeling and juvenile shelter care

— $7,000 to Bridges Community Center for a mental health outreach specialist

— $6,000 to Potters’ Center Services to strengthen family culture

— $5,005 to the Urban League of Racine and Kenosha for pre-apprenticeship training program

— $5,000 to Kenosha Area Family and Aging Services for volunteer transportation service

— $5,000 to the Kenosha Literacy Council for its literacy program

— $5,000 to New Song Ministries for reducing recidivism

— $5,000 to the Southeast Wisconsin Council of the Boy Scouts of America for an after-school program

— $5,000 to the Spanish Centers of Racine, Kenosha and Walworth for community outreach and translations

— $5,000 to Walkin’ In My Shoes for survival backpack outreach program

— $4,633 to Lemon Street Gallery to bring WiFi access to the Union Park neighborhood

The recommendations from the committee will go to the City Plan Commission for further review on March 4 and the Finance Committee on March 15.

The distribution is expected to be approved at the March 15 City Council meeting.
