A Kenosha man who tried to rob a tavern Wednesday was later caught after getting tangled up with two bartenders fleeing the scene.

Davond D. Pipes, 32, was arrested shortly after the 1:24 a.m. robbery at Spanky’s Bar & Grill, 2325 52nd St. A police report said officers found him on the porch of a home in the 5400 block of 25th Avenue. Pipes matched witnesses’ descriptions of the robber.

Pipes was charged later Wednesday with armed robbery. Police reports said he had been released from the Kenosha County jail just hours before the robbery.

A 27-year-old bartender told police Pipes came into the bar and asked her for a bag of chips and to break a $50 bill. When the bartender turned to grab the chips, Pipes jumped over the bar and brandished a knife.

According to witnesses, the bartender screamed and ran, but collided with another bartender, a 43-year-old woman, who was exiting a bathroom. That bartender was knocked unconscious after apparently tripping over a chair, falling and hitting her head.

The injured woman landed at Pipes’ feet, causing the other bartender to trip before running to the back of the bar.

Two bar patrons immediately rushed to aid the injured bartender without realizing what was happening. But Pipes stopped one man and demanded money.

“All of a sudden, I look up, and he’s standing in front of me,” the man said in a phone interview. “I noticed he had a metal object, like a blade or something in his hand.”

When the man said he didn’t have any cash, Pipes answered, “Let me check,” and started reaching for the man’s pockets.

“Not being a dummy, I just said, ‘Hold it,’ and I gave him the money I had in my pocket,” the man said, adding he gave Pipes about $130.

Pipes took the cash and bolted out the back door.

“Once I gave him the money and he left, everybody was safe,” the man said. “Before that you didn’t know what was going to happen.”

No damage was done to the bar, and no other money was taken, reports said.

The injured bartender was taken to Kenosha Medical Center and treated for possible head, back and neck injuries.
