Gallo serves as good role model for students

We applaud David Gallo’s tenacious efforts to have his name added to the ballot as an official candidate for election to the Kenosha Unified School Board. Instead of stopping his efforts, feeling powerless, and not pursuing his goal, Mr. Gallo continued to do something positive.

We believe there is an important lesson to be learned from his actions. Often when a person feels an injustice has been done towards him/her, a feeling of powerlessness takes over and a satisfactory resolution to the problem is never reached. Instead, the aggrieved may hold a grudge, never pursue a dream, become a complainer, seek revenge or lose interest in doing something positive.

We have often seen this tendency of feeling powerless to address a perceived wrong in the students and parents we work with. Consequentially, we always encourage them to “keep at it” until all avenues have been explored.

Sometimes, we may even suggest the next step the student or parent should take because we believe being an advocate for oneself is a valuable skill and should be encouraged. Advocating in a positive, well-planned manner is a strategy that all of us need to practice and model for our youngsters and our peers.

Good for David Gallo!
