SOMERS — A long-awaited comprehensive plan for the town’s outdoor park and recreation programs will have a public hearing tonight.

The hearing, part of a joint meeting of the town’s plan and park commissions, begins at 6:30 p.m. in the Town Hall, 7511 12th St.

The Park Commission is expected to vote on it tonight. On Tuesday, the Town Board will discuss and vote on the plan at its regularly scheduled meeting at 7 p.m., also in the Town Hall.

A half year in the making, the plan takes into account town-sponsored sports programs as well as the future development of six proposed parks.

Developed by Ruekert Mielke, the firm hired by the board earlier this spring, the plan also incorporates feedback from residents who submitted surveys regarding activities, amenities and recreational fields, ranging from ball diamonds to rain gardens and walking trails.

An open house, where residents could review the plan and make comments, took place last month.

Preliminary concepts for smaller neighborhood parks included:

— Country Charm subdivision, east of 94th Street.

— Valley View, west of 64th Avenue.

— One named in honor of slain Kenosha County Deputy Frank Fabiano, north of 12th Street (Highway E) between the Union Pacific Railway and Sheridan Road.

Larger park proposals:

— The 24.2-acre parcel known as the Gitzlaff property north of Town Hall.

— 14-acre park already being used south of Town Hall.

— A 34.7-acre parcel on Highway EA.

The town is required to have a comprehensive plan for parks and recreation in order to apply for Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources grants that would help fund their development.

The town also collects fees from developers, with that money set aside for parkland development.
